How to Keep Your Hair Extensions Healthy All Summer
Summer is the season everyone's hair has big expectations for thriving but often suffers in reality. The sun bleaches, chlorine dries, humidity frizzes, and sweat — well, sweat does what sweat does.
If you have extensions, all of that gets amplified. But it doesn't have to be a problem. You just need to know what you're protecting against and why.
Here's everything your IBE extensions need from you between now and September.
UV and Heat: Your Color's Biggest Enemy
UV rays break down hair proteins and fade color — both your natural hair and the extension hair, which is often color-treated. If you've invested in extensions, protecting that investment from the sun is non-negotiable.
What to do:
Use a UV-protectant hair mist or spray before going outdoors. Apply from mid-shaft to ends.
Wear a hat or scarf when you're in direct sun for extended periods — not just for your skin.
Avoid applying heat tools on top of sun-exposed, already-stressed hair. If you blew out before a beach day, let it air dry after.
IBE extensions handle heat better than bonded methods because there's no adhesive to melt or slip. But the hair fiber itself still needs protection.
Sweat: Rinse, Don't Ignore It
Salt from sweat is drying and, left on extensions over time, can affect the texture and integrity of the hair. A post-workout rinse — even just with water — makes a bigger difference than most people expect.
What to do:
Rinse your hair (especially around the extensions) with cool water after heavy workouts.
If you're washing more frequently due to sweat, use a sulfate-free shampoo and always follow with conditioner from mid-shaft to ends. Never skip conditioner.
Avoid pulling your hair into tight ponytails or topknots when it's wet from sweat — this stresses the extension attachment points.
Chlorine and Salt Water: Prepare Before You Get In
Chlorine is the harshest thing your extensions will encounter all summer. It strips color, dries the hair fiber, and over time affects how the extensions blend with your natural hair. Salt water is kinder but still dehydrating.
What to do:
Before the pool: Wet your hair thoroughly with clean water first. Hair saturated with clean water absorbs less chlorinated water. Then apply a leave-in or light oil to create a barrier.
Braid it: A loose braid or low bun keeps extensions from tangling underwater and minimizes surface area exposure.
After swimming: Rinse immediately with clean water. Don't let chlorine sit on extensions any longer than necessary.
Monthly clarifying treatment: One clarifying shampoo wash per month during swim season removes chlorine and mineral buildup that regular shampoo misses. Follow with a deep conditioning treatment.
If you're a serious swimmer — multiple times a week, competitive pool time — talk to your stylist at your next appointment about whether your current extension method and maintenance schedule needs to adjust for the summer.
Humidity and Frizz: Work With It, Not Against It
Humidity makes extension hair behave differently than natural hair because extension hair doesn't have the same natural moisture regulation. The cuticle is more vulnerable to swelling and frizzing in humid conditions.
What to do:
Apply a lightweight anti-humidity or anti-frizz serum through your extensions before leaving the house on humid days. Ask us, we have recommendations in the salon.
Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase — it reduces friction and moisture absorption overnight, which is especially important in summer when you're more likely to go to bed with damp or product-free hair.
Low-manipulation styles (braids, loose waves, soft updos) are your best friend on high-humidity days. Fighting frizz with heat on humid days is a losing battle.
The Scalp Connection: Why Summer Is Actually the Best Time for a Head Spa
Here's something most extension clients don't think about: summer is when your scalp gets the most neglected. Sunscreen, sweat, salt, and product buildup layer up on your scalp while your focus is on your hair. And a compromised scalp affects how well your extensions sit, how your hair grows in the transition, and how your scalp feels during wear.
The head spa rituals comings soon to our new Skin + Body Lounge were designed for exactly this. And the best time to book one is right at your next extension install or move-up appointment — not during the in-between weeks, but as the bookend before your stylist puts in fresh work. A clean, balanced scalp means better extension adhesion and a healthier foundation for the hair underneath. We can’t wait to tell you about all the other benefits of this treatment, too!
